The "P-38 Lightning" was the only American fighter built before WWII that was in production on VJ Day. It was used in all U.S. combat zones as a high and low altitude fighter, bomber-escort, bomber, photographic-reconnaissance aircraft, low level attack, rocket launcher, and smoke-screen layer. It provided the U.S. Army Air Corps with an airplane that helped dominate the Pacific Sky; and it was a major factor in the allied victory, as evidenced by the fact that Americas two top aces in WWII, Bong and McGuire, flew P-38s. The "Lightning" is probably most remembered for its interception and destruction of the "Mitsubishi" bomber that was carrying Japan's Admiral Yamamoto.
